Back to school is always a time of renewal. It’s the perfect opportunity to make a fresh start, not only academically, but also environmentally. A time of the year, like January 1st, when we like to adopt new resolutions and habits.

Why not opt for a green schoolbag? Now is the time to help preserve our planet while instilling good ecological habits in our children. Here are a few practical tips to make back-to-school a sustainable experience.

1.  Choose sustainable supplies:

A chore for some, a real treat for others! Selecting supplies is often an essential step… and you can choose the sustainable and environmentally friendly ones! Choose products made from recycled or renewable materials. Choose FSC-certified wooden pencils, refillable pens, notebooks made from recycled paper and fabric pockets instead of plastic. By opting for quality products, you reduce the need to replace them frequently.

2.  Reuse and recycle:

It’s sometimes tempting to rush out and buy everything new again, but beware: first make an inventory of what you already have at home. Many items, such as calculators, kits and rulers, can be reused from one year to the next. If you have supplies that are in good condition but no longer needed, consider donating them or swapping them with other families. Recycling is also essential: properly recycle supplies that can no longer be used.

3.  Avoid unnecessary packaging:

When buying snacks or packed lunches, look for options with minimal packaging. Avoid individually wrapped foods and opt for reusable containers: there are lots of very practical and attractive ones! Invest in a drinking bottle instead of disposable plastic bottles. Not only does this reduce waste, it’s also economical in the long term.

4. Choose a Durable Schoolbag:

The choice of schoolbag itself is crucial. Opt for a backpack or schoolbag made from sustainable materials, such as organic cotton or recycled polyester. Make sure the schoolbag is of good quality and well designed to withstand a busy school year. Ergonomic shoulder straps and well-designed compartments can make carrying books and supplies more comfortable and efficient.

5. Make your children more environmentally aware:

The back-to-school season is also an excellent opportunity to raise your children’s awareness of the importance of ecology. Explain to them why it’s important to make environmentally-friendly choices and how this helps to protect the planet. Involve them in the process of buying supplies and encourage them to take care of their stuff so that it can be reused the following year.

Environmental education is the key to a future generation of responsible adults!

In conclusion, an eco-friendly back-to-school is not out of reach. Whatever our financial means, it is possible to make conscious, sustainable choices when buying school supplies. By doing so, you’re helping to reduce your family’s ecological footprint while passing on positive values to your children. A green schoolbag is not only good for the planet, it can also inspire others to follow your example and take action in favour of the environment. And that’s something we really need!
